If you frequently camp or spend time outdoors, you know how essential starting a fire can be. It's a source of light, warmth, and food. In an emergency situation, starting a fire could save your life. Even though this skill is so important, sometimes conditions are far from ideal when it comes to starting a fire. Luckily, this lemon fire starter can help you get a fire going in almost any climate. All you need are a few simple items to create this lifesaving DIY. Best of all, they are very portable and will fit easily into any hiking bag.
For this DIY, you will need:
  • A lemon
  • Six copper clips
  • Six zinc nails
  • Wire
  • Steel wool
Here's how to make your own lemon fire starter:
  1. Roll the lemon between your palms to soften it.
  2. Stick the copper clips into the lemon, spaced about a centimeter apart, creating a row of clips.
  3. Create another row next to the copper clips with the zinc nails. Make sure the copper clips and the zinc nails don't touch each other.
  4. Attach wire between the second copper clip and the third zinc nail. Do this for all the clips and nails, leaving the first copper nail and last zinc clip.
  5. Wrap wire around the first copper clip and the last zinc nail. Make sure the ends of these wires don't touch.
  6. Prepare you fire pit with steel wool and some fire starter like tissue paper. Touch the ends of the wire to the steel wool. This will create a short circuit and ignite the fire starter.
